It’s time, once again, to talk about the Pantone Color of the Year.
I look forward to this post every year because I feel like the color of the year really sets the mood for the year…except for last year, remember Classic Blue? The calming shade of azure? Apparently, 2020 missed the memo about being calm!
I guess we really shouldn’t hold anyone accountable for the way 2020 went off the rails but as we look to the new year it’s clear that when choosing a color for the year much consideration is given that goes far beyond a design element.
The color of the year is meant to be a whole mood and in 2021 we’re getting not one but two amazing pantone colors to focus on.
The folks over at Pantone have paired up 17-5104 Ultimate Gray with 13-0647 Illuminating for a combo that represents strength and hope. After the year we had, who couldn’t use a little more strength and hope!
While the gray and yellow combo is certainly not a new concept, I truly love what it stands for this year and want to see it everywhere.
Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute said it best, “The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock-solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.”
Gray – The Lasting Neutral
With gray being a popular neutral for the last several years, I’m betting that most of us will be able to incorporate some bright yellow into our existing gray decor to easily achieve this look.
I’m thinking of a yellow throw to brighten up a gray sofa. Maybe a yellow lamp on an end table. I can already picture pops of happy yellow photo frames and accent pieces dotting built-ins and shelves!
In the bedroom, this could look like adding yellow throw pillows to a gray bedroom set or maybe a yellow and gray area rug.
I think the kitchen will be a very popular space for this combo as Illuminating reminds me of the color of lemons. Everyone loves a kitchen full of bright, clean-smelling lemons!
Of course, the color of the year is not just meant to be inspo for designers. These colors will be exhibited in home decor, fashion, beauty, and more so start looking to pair up gray and yellow in all areas of your life!
