The holidays are an intimate, familial time for most of us.
We host parties, expect drop-in guests and welcome home family members we’ve waited long months to see.
It’s no surprise we want our homes to be as warm, welcoming and beautiful as possible.
As a designer, it comes as no surprise then when longtime clients ask me to help transform their homes for the holiday season.
After all, if they have entrusted me with designing their living spaces for the other 10 months of the year, who better to help them make their homes magical for the holidays?
I have worked with John and Karen to design their O’Fallon, Mo., for several years.
Our professional relationship started with a picture of a Kravet area rug. From that point of inspiration, we worked together on redesigning the living room.
We later tackled the kitchen, the dining room, powder room and master bedroom and bath. We overhauled the guest bedroom and made some improvements to the lower level.
When I’ve worked with clients as well and as long as John and Karen, I know their tastes, style and home almost as well as I know my own.
It feels only right when they ask me to take on their holiday decorating.
For the holiday décor in the dining room, we chose neutral tones that matched the existing colors of the room. I decided to use mercury glass as my theme.
The medallions that hang on the wall are permanent fixtures but work with the Christmas décor as well. Whenever you can make an existing feature work with your holiday décor – it’s brilliant!
In the living room, Karen wanted to use traditional red and green, so I started with a gorgeous mantle spray from Eckert’s Florist.
We added fun sparkle with the trees and ornaments from Kirkland’s and the glittery green reindeer and red packages from RAZ Imports.
Last year, she wanted to add more detail to the living room décor so we added some festive swags to the banisters.
The elf hats and shoes were fun and fit in with the whimsical theme.
This year I am hoping to add a tree to the room!
I truly enjoy holiday decorating, and love taking on the task for existing and new clients.
I know the holidays are a joyous, but overwhelming time for many.
