Celebrating Colorfully with a Kate Spade-Inspired Christmas Design

There was a time not so long ago when every home had a similar Christmas décor.

A green Christmas tree, freshly-cut or artificial, was decorated in the corner with red, gold or silver ornaments, tinsel and garland.

A red and green wreath hung on the door, while ceramic or wooden Santas and Nutcrackers stood watch from the mantle or dining room hutch. A manger scene sat serenely in a treasured spot.

While those decorations may make us nostalgic for the homes of our grandparents or great-grandparents, the styles and means of holiday decor have certainly changed.

Now, every family has their own “style” for the holidays.

Red, green, gold and silver are no longer the only options available for Christmas decorations. One glance at any store’s holiday aisle and you’ll see the sky is the limit.

Trees come in bright pink, blue, white and even black! Some families even forego the tree altogether and opt to spent their money and effort on decorating the rest of the house instead.

Sure, there are lots of folks who prefer the traditional, and it’s always beautiful to see a traditional green tree with gorgeous gold and silver decorations.

But as an interior designer who does many, many holiday installations this time of year, I have to say I enjoy seeing the different variations on tradition. I love that every family can put their own spin on Christmas!

These clients moved into their new home in June. I designed their entire home, so I wasn’t surprised when they asked me to decorate their mantles and staircase for the holidays.

As is the case with many new homeowners, she wanted her holiday décor to be representative of her year-round “look.”

I call this the “Kate Spade Christmas.”

When I think of my client and her taste I immediately think of crisp color, graphic prints and playful sophistication, the hallmarks of designer Kate Spade.

In 1993, Kate Brosnahan Spade, a former accessories editor at Mademoiselle set out to design the perfect handbag. Women and fashion editors fell for the fresh, modern sensibility, and bold colors that became easily recognizable as the Kate Spade brand.

Now, Kate Spade is a global lifestyle brand that aims to inspire colorful living through their many lines, which include handbags, clothing, stationery, eyewear, tabletop, bedding and gifts.

So when I designed this holiday décor, I had Kate Spade’s collection at the forefront of my mind. I thought about “living colorfully” – the motto of the brand, and incorporated that into the design.

I purchased and ordered pieces from Home Goods, Baisch and Skinner, The Rusted Chandelier and RAZ.

The final holiday design is bold, colorful and unlike any Christmas décor I’ve done before. It is the perfect take on tradition for my clients’ new home.
